Uniqueness is a hot commodity in Melbourne, so it’s no wonder everyone from your hairdresser to your grandmother is seeking out pre-loved treasures. Making gasp-worthy finds a lot less rare is knowing exactly how and where to shop second hand in Melbs.

Kirsta Hawkins, founder of northside's coolest consignment, Mutual Muse, knows better than anyone what prizes await you in the city’s secondhand scene. There, you can swap your gently worn clothing for some new-to-you goodies.
“We’re buying the clothes directly from the public, and then we offer cash or store credit upfront,” Hawkins says. But usually? “People like to take store credit because they can get new clothes,” she says. And we say why not.

The benefits of shopping for preloved clothes spans from your conscience to your wallet, but Hawkins says don’t overlook the fun factor, where sifting through those endless racks is a weekend affair best done with friends.
When it comes to year-round pieces, the team always looks out for Melbourne’s favourite local designers, listing Alpha 60 and Kuwaii as main contenders.
Her hot tip for pieces that will last is ditching trends and digging out fine fabrics instead. Natural fibres are less likely to pill or tatter quickly (saving you future dollars).
“Wool in winter, linen in summer, [and] something that has a really nice feel–kinda buttery–like organic cotton” Hawkins says.
After 10 years in the industry, Hawkins’ tip for snagging those rare finds is simple: “Look at every item in the store… you never know what you’re gonna miss when it's hiding in the racks”.

Ready to treasure hunt? Here’s the best of secondhand in Melbourne as of 2025, by area:
BRUNSWICK STREET:
Lost & Found
288 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
In terms of variety, you can’t go wrong with this expansive flea market just above Brunswick Street. Lost and Found is a huge warehouse filled with absolutely everything you could ever want, whether you’re a vintage fashion collector or home decorator (yes, you may end up with a few lamps). The prices are set by the individual stallholders, so expect some bargains and some luxe finds. Free up at least an afternoon for this place—you’ll need it!
Hunter Gatherer
247 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
Where opportunity and vintage shopping perfectly intersect. Hunter Gatherer may look like many of its vintage store counterparts, but this corner store gem on Brunswick Street is run by friendly volunteers from the Brotherhood of St Laurence. That means your eclectic grandpa-esque purchases are making a meaningful difference via this non-profit turned vintage haven.
OTC Vintage
404 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
From chic sportswear to vintage leather, Out of the Closet is a secondhand hotspot in fashion-forward Fitzroy. Expect plenty of 90’s and noughties finds, at accessible prices. When your arms start to tire from sifting, ask the on-trend staff for their top picks or peruse their Insta in advance to keep an eye on the new drops.
American Vintage
133 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
It’s all right there in the name. American Vintage stocks over 7,000 pieces at any given time, so you can pick up all the classics: endless cowboy boots, varsity jackets, and an abundance of denim from jackets to cut-offs and every style of jean. Expect a bi-annual drop carefully curated by the stores' two owners directly from the states, including only the highest quality, authentic pieces.
HIGH STREET:
Mutual Muse
282 High Street, Northcote
Specialising in contemporary fashion, Mutual Muse is a ‘buy outright’ subgenre of consignment. The team at Mutual Muse pride themselves on curating a selection of secondhand that’s both age- and size-inclusive–with almost all racks labelled by size to save on time. Prices vary on designer and vintage status, but rest assured your find will be gently used and totally on-trend–the staff here are meticulous!
Salvos Stores
346 High Street, Northcote
Our favourite thing about Salvos Stores across Melb? Their almighty student discount day. Every Wednesday, show your student card to save 20 percent off your haul and grab enough stylish ‘fits to get you through next semester’s break. Our top pick? Northcote, easily. If your intuition’s treating you right you may even pop in during one of their random designer drops. Not to mention: anything slightly off-season that neighbouring Mutual Muse rejects, is highly likely to end up here–at their local oppie.
CHAPEL STREET:
Storehouse Thrift
77 Chapel Street, Windsor
A store as heart-warming as it is cool. We aspire to be as savvy and altruistic as the crew behind Storehouse Thrift, a bunch of do-gooders working to combat addiction in adolescents. You know that shopping through these garments will not only perfect your Cher à la Clueless Wardrobe Master Plan (forever iconic) but also help a heck load of people.
Shag
130 Chapel Street, Windsor
The couple behind Shag have been in biz since 1996. That’s right–these are some serious secondhand veterans (and it certainly shows). The stores aesthetic oozes Studio 54 energy, perfectly in sync with the whimsical collection of reworked vintage, dead stock, and pieces from the owners own vintage archives. Expect anything and everything embellished, with origins dating all the way from the ‘20s to the 2000’s.
Chapel Street Bazaar
217 Chapel Street, Prahran
Do you know that scene from Wild Child where Emma Roberts and her posse have a shopping spree-turned-music-video moment in the British op shop? You can recreate that at the Chapel Street Bazaar. It’s a vast assemblage of crockery, crystals, dolls, shoes, clothes and jewels, spliced into stalls by passionate purveyors, like an antique mini-mall.
HAMPTON STREET:
Paris ‘99
281 Hampton Street, Hampton
Self-identifying as a ‘premier international designer resale salon’, the vibes are fabulously boujee in upstairs showroom, Paris ‘99. This is no regular secondhand store though, founder (and fashion designer) Yahav Ron buys direct from a network of 50 uber-stylish women across Europe and the US. The salon’s focus opposes any trend cycles, opting instead for timeless pieces and natural fabrics.
Vinnies Op Shops
505 Hampton Street, Hampton
The Vinnies Op Shops pepper our city like little gold deposits with pristine window displays and oodles of bargains. They’re clean and specialise in sifting through hoards of donations to weed out the best stuff for you. Special mention to the huge collection of crockery and furniture at the Hampton fixture. Very good for fitting out shared house kitchens and lounges. Live it, learn it.
MELBOURNE CBD:
Vintage Sole
Cathedral Arcade, 6/37 Swanston Street, Melbourne CBD
The thrifty breed of shopaholics behind Vintage Sole have been in the biz of garnering vintage clothing, footwear and accessories for over a decade now. Housed in Melbourne City’s stunning Nicholas building, this chic boutique offers everything from contemporary trends to vintage staples from all over the world. Pit stop at neighbouring cafe, bar, and place to be seen: Cathedral Coffee. A must for weekends in the city.
RetroStar Vintage Clothing
Cathedral Arcade, 1/37 Swanston Street, Melbourne CBD
While you’re on Swanston Street, be sure to check out RetroStar Vintage Clothing. Opening up shop in 2002, RetroStar is still hailed as one of the largest vintage stores in Melbourne. Their specialty? All things 1940s through to 1990s (hello JT-and-Brit-worthy denim ensembles). It’s a maze of clothes, shoes, bags and bling. Make a day of this Nicholas building duo.
American Rag
Level 3, QV Building, Melbourne CBD
Located up a discrete staircase off Melbourne’s Little Lonsdale Street, American Rag is guaranteed to excite any vintage fanatic. Sourced regularly from LA to New York, the American Rag team has been handpicking the best of the US for over 28 years. While true vintage isn’t exactly cheap, you can expect to find that dream coat or dress with huge main character energy.
COLLINGWOOD:
GoodByes
2 Johnston Street, Collingwood
There’s no other way to put it, Goodbyes is like Depop irl. When your wardrobe’s screaming for a Marie Kondo-ing, grab all the goodies that don’t bring *you* joy and profit as soon as they’ve been bought. The team has a sharp eye for things they think will sell, so you’re probably gonna find your next statement piece among the aisles, along with plenty of designer goods. Remember to look out for the weekly on-sale colour for extra savings.
SWOP
8 Peel Street, Collingwood
You’ll be forgiven for mistaking this place for a boujee designer store–tucked just off Smith Street in the heart of Collingwood, SWOP is shaking up the secondhand scene. After building a fanbase in Brissy’s West End, the team opened shop in Naarm, bringing along their tried and cherished high-end consignment model. You can swap your stuff for impeccably curated and hard-to-find pieces or shop from scratch. Be sure to bring your extra large tote, or grab one of the iconic stripeys’ from Pan After just up the road.
BRUNSWICK:
Savers
330 Sydney Road, Brunswick
From San Francisco to Melbourne, Savers is the OG American thrift store making secondhand accessible on a global scale, while sourcing locally in each location. Speaking of, if you donate before you shop you’ll score a discount card to make an already cheap spot more spending savvy, so the hardest part is having any space left in your trolley.
Brotherhood Of St Laurence
145 Lygon Street, Brunswick
Get a solid fit and help an amazing cause at the many Brotherhood of St Laurence stores. Dedicated to addressing poverty, BSL is an organisation where helping the greater community is the core of its ethos. And here’s a cheeky heads up; the one on the corner of Brunswick Road and Lygon Street is one of the best op shops Brunswick (and Melbourne) has on deck.
BONUS ‘FIT PICKS
Bruce
157 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy
Just around the corner from the overflowing hauls of Brunswick and Smith St, lies Bruce–a secondhand store where other secondhand store owners shop. Industry folk flock to Bruce for the best; Comme des Garçons, Issey Miyake, Acne Studios, Miu Miu–it’s all here. Not for the bargain hunter however, with price tags from low hundreds up to thousands–but for some of the hardest-to-find pieces at a fraction of the retail price–it’s worth a peruse (on payday). Celebrate your wins with a vino at neighbour Marion afterward.
Retropolis
1 Newman Street, Preston
Preston’s giant indoor flea market, Retropolis is home to over 65 of Melbourne’s best vintage and speciality curators. To call this place iconic is an understatement—their cash register is housed in a glossy turquoise Ford Falcon (named Angel). Stocking everything you could ever imagine, Retropolis is an absolute must-do for vintage lovers. PSA: You’ve got to follow their Insta for a regular update on the coolest new entries (which you can call up and dibs).
